Contrast Material: A healthcare provider inserts a small, lubricated tube into your rectum and slowly pumps the liquid barium (and sometimes air) into your bowel. Imaging: The barium coats the inside lining of your colon. Because X-rays cannot pass easily through barium, it creates a bright, highly detailed outline of your large intestine on the X-ray monitor.
